The FIFA World Cup 2026 will be held in the United States, Mexico, and Canada. This decision was made by FIFA’s 2018 Congress, and the three North American countries have been preparing for the event ever since.

The 2026 World Cup will include 48 competing teams, an increase from the current 32. The three hosting nations will instead update their current stadium facilities, including Mexico City’s Estadio Azteca, Arlington’s AT&T Stadium, and Toronto’s BMO Field, as a result of the unknown tournament format, as opposed to Qatar’s preparations for the 2022 World Cup.

FIFA stipulates that stadiums must have a minimum of 40,000 seats, quarterfinal stadiums a minimum of 60,000 seats, and the field where the opening ceremony or final will take place a minimum of 80,000 seats. The Canadian stadium must almost triple its current seating capacity to meet these standards.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will take place in 16 stadiums, with 11 in the United States, 3 in Mexico, and 2 in Canada.

Where will the matches be played in 2026 FIFA World Cup?

The bulk of the 16 stadiums are large-capacity stadiums utilised by American NFL teams and all 16 have already been constructed.

Before 2026, certain stadiums will undergo modifications, while some will require the installation of grass fields because FIFA forbids artificial turf.

The tournament will consist of 80 matches according to the present structure, though that may change. A total of 60 matches, including each game beyond the quarterfinals, would be held in the United States, with neighbouring countries Canada and Mexico each hosting 10.
